Michael Zychinski
Former Chief Ethics & Compliance Officer - Deloitte LLP
Mike Zychinski served as Deloitte’s Chief Ethics and Compliance Officer (CECO) from June 2008 to March 2016. In this role, Mr. Zychinski served on the Strategic Risk Committee of the firm, addressing emerging issues and developing mitigation strategies. During his tenure as CECO, he reported to three CEOs and three Board Chairs, serving as a trusted and collaborative advisor. As CECO, Mr. Zychinski led efforts to restructure the firm’s compliance processes and systems to best in class. His responsibilities included all programs relating to ethics, personal independence, licensing, continuing education, political activity, and anti-corruption, among others. Such programs covered over 70,000 personnel, including the U.S. and ventures in India, Mexico and Germany. He engaged directly with regulators, including the PCAOB and SEC. As CECO, Mr. Zychinski managed a globally based team of over 200 people.
Mr. Zychinski’s tenure with Deloitte spanned nearly 40 years, with retirement in May 2016. Prior to his role as CECO, Mr. Zychinski served in various leadership roles with the firm, including Managing Partner and Audit Leader in Central Florida and Managing Partner in St. Louis. In the St. Louis marketplace, he was responsible for a team of 250 people and managed local operations with revenue exceeding $75M. In both Central Florida and St. Louis, Mr. Zychinski served clients in various industries, including manufacturing and distribution, energy, healthcare, retail and hospitality. Client relationships managed by Mr. Zychinski included both audit and non-audit engagements, for organizations ranging from mid-size private enterprises to Fortune 500 companies.
In addition to Mr. Zychinski’s roles in the boardroom with Deloitte and many clients, he has over 30 years of direct governance experience, serving in a leadership capacity on 20 NFP and advisory boards. Organizations served include Junior Achievement (Board Chair), St. Louis Symphony (Treasurer and Audit Committee Chair) and Boy Scouts (Board Chair), to name just a few. Mr. Zychinski was a Founding Sponsor and Advisory Board Member of the Notre Dame Deloitte Center for Ethical Leadership. He has also served as speaker and guest lecturer for many organizations, including the Institute for Internal Auditors, Heart of America Tax Institute, University of Texas, Notre Dame and Boston College. Mr. Zychinski is a Certified Public Accountant and member of the AICPA and NACD. He graduated from St. Louis University in 1975 (BSBA) and 1976 (MBA), with highest honors and professional recognition. He has been recognized by St. Louis University as an Outstanding Alumnus. Recently, he was recognized for his contributions in the field of Ethics and Compliance by the University of Illinois.
Mr. Zychinski and his wife, Jeanne Zychinski, reside in St. Louis, Missouri. They have three grown children and two grandchildren.
